Research Status

I am working on memory and storage systems research, and currently focus on the topics including flash storage system, in-memory storage and computing and programmable networked storage.

For the flash storage system research, I started the “re-architect and re-design the flash storage” research from 2010, and proposed the “software managed flash” (later known as Open-Channel SSD), which removes the FTL and exposes the flash memory hardware to system software for direct management [FAST’13, FAST’14, USENIX ATC’16]. This novel way of flash usage is now being adopted in industry.

For the memory system research, I studied the crash consistency problem of persistent memory [ICCD’14], which is one of the early works to abstract this problem, and proposed to reduce the persistence overhead in a software-based way [MSST’15, Best Paper RunnerUp], which is a new direction in reducing consistency overhead. I also designed and implemented a RDMA-based distributed NVM file system, Octopus. Octopus reduces the software latency by two orders, and effectively exploits the hardware benefits [USENIX ATC’17]. This design is attractive in big data analytics and AI systems that demand extremely low-latency of I/Os.
